This was the first kippah I made. I showed it to a rabbi, and I can't get her reaction out of my mind. It's made of 100% post consumer trash: pressed plastic sewn to a bra cup with sparkly embroidery floss and cookie and candy wrappers.
Apparently, it isn't very traditional.
It is sturdy and well-made, out of materials that will allow it to be passed from generation to generation. It will gather patina but it will remain a kippah. Six generations from now, jewish children will hold it and wonder why some people call it a yarmulke.
The man seated behind you would be lucky to behold it, but he'd probably think it was weird and get mad.
And I think that's beautiful. This piece is destined for a family that wants to protect it.
