Artist Statement
I make art for the same reason I microwave fish in the office breakroom. Causing disgust. Making your face scrunch up in revulsion. Maybe you’ll cry a little, and I will extend my tongue, lizard like, to collect your tears.
Inspired by German post war expressionism - artists of the era had to sit with the complicity and complacency that must come with industrialized atrocity.
I aim to use found and reclaimed objects in my work because the art supply industries are impacted by the same supply chain issues as fast fashion – this is silly, because we already have everything we need, and we’re throwing it away in the trash.
Sustainable Business Practices
I experiment with studio scraps, household trash, medical waste, e-waste and other ephemera to create physical collage, sculpture, and traditional items. I photograph these experiments, and use digital tools to layer them with other photographs from my experiences. Then I draw, write, paint, and express on the layers. Once I like a piece, I print it out, tear it up, and repeat the cycle.
This process is very fluid, and I create a lot of different types of images. Printing archival prints is not inexpensive, and creating these prints requires resource use that I can't realistically audit. Therefore, as of 2025, I am switching to a pre-order model, where all of my digital images can be viewed on this website until a collector steps forward.
This means that the images you see for many digital works are the digital images. Once a work has been printed by Jarred at Photo to Canvas in Portland, OR, there's usually a lot more depth to the work! The paper we use for this process is textured and the ink is cold pressed.
