I created this community guide in the backseat of my car between ride share drives, using painted papers, old envelopes, ink and found business cards. Serving the community as a ride share driver was depressing and difficult work. Whether riders engaged with my humanity or ignored it, the work was challengingly intimate and left me feeling like a financially exploited receptacle.
I had thought to reclaim the suffering by creating content for the internet, but decided to honor the that I didn't want to. Instead, I gathered business cards from the other creators I was meeting at craft shows and other events and collaged them into a community book for the passengers.
The value proposition for the work I was doing shifted entirely.
Once this piece was installed, the days got lighter, and getting out of bed got easier. I knew art lovers would have an opportunity to see my work as part of their daily routine.
Dozens of passengers engaged with the book, found meaning in the art, and began relationships with local businesses. Their experience also included the opportunity to chat with a fine artist outside of an institution. Many asked thoughtful and engaging questions about my practice.
