Postcards from Ione

2020. This triptych was inspired by a trip to a small town in California, where the former boys’ prison is a place to sightsee on Halloween and the local fair featured multiple booths with good old boys selling red hats and 2nd amendment shirts. The scene reminded me of a photograph taken in Colorado in 1926 of the KKK on a Ferris wheel.

Gelli Plate ink Scraps

Form follows material.

This mini-series explores the technique of nothingness -

the remains of paint on the palette, scraps of paper, fleeting light and fleeting energy -

I made marks on a gelli plate and pressed -

revealing core emotions - grief, hope, and rage.

This collection invites the beholder to connect with their own emotions - 

to find value and validity in the ways they hold fast when all seems lost.

Slurpee Cup Dry Point

I drank a slurpee and then cut the plastic cup and rolled it flat. Then I drew these shapes in the plastic with a fine point and printed them using oil based ink.

Soda Can Intaglio

I created these while I was recovering from COVID-19 by cutting open soda cans, flattening them, and using a sharp point to remove lines from the layer of plastic that was adhered to the aluminum.

I made all of these watercolors the same evening. I was home sick in bed, but I felt like I wasn't allowed to stop, wasn't allowed to rest. I brought the paint and paper into bed with me and create a world called Zhul with a city called Zhul Town. These are some of Zhul's most famous landscapes, flora, and fauna.
